BIOGRAPHY

Uğurcan Öztekin (b. 1990) is an Istanbul-based composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. Upon the invitation of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts, he is currently residing in Bamberg as a fellow of the International House of Artists Villa Concordia for the 2025–2026 season.

First Prize winner of the 2019 Calefax Composers Competition for his piece "Conference of the Birds: Amsterdam," Öztekin's international distinctions include the Festival Mixtur 2016 Commission Prize (Spain), First Prize (2015, "Visions of Z") and Third Prize (2017, "Visions of Z III") in the Electronic Music Category of the Computer Space International Computer Arts Forum (Bulgaria), Third Prize in the 11th Pre-Art Composition Competition with "Wandlungen" (Switzerland, 2018), Third Prize in the 4th Choral Composition Competition of the Turkish Ministry of Culture with "Bir Günün Sonunda Arzu," and selections for the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2017 Next Generation Call for Scores with "Naufragii" (Germany) and the Atlas Ensemble Composition Competition with "Epitaph" (Netherlands, 2014).

His music has been performed in Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, at concerts and festivals such as Donaueschinger Musiktage 2017, Festival Mixtur (Barcelona), Atlas Festival (Amsterdam), Barcelona Modern Festival, Festival Turbulences Sonores (Montpellier), Musica Electronica Nova (Wroclaw), the Closing Concert of the International Composers Seminar in St. Petersburg (2017), ME_MMIX18 Festival Pirineus-Mediterrània Modern (Mallorca), Computer Space Computer Arts Forum (Sofia), Baroquestock Festival (London), Festival Unicum (Ljubljana), and Calgary New Music Festival. He has also given seminars on his own music within these organizations. Since 2016, his works have been published by the Paris-based publishing house BabelScores.

Öztekin's works have been performed by leading ensembles such as Ensemble Airborne Extended, Trio Amos, Atlas Ensemble, Barcelona Modern Ensemble, Ensemble Cairn, Calefax Reed Quintet, Ensemble Diagonal, Gedik Philharmonic Orchestra, Hezarfen Ensemble, Molot Ensemble, Pre-Art Soloists, Semplice Quartet, and the Turkish State Polyphonic Choir. Recordings of his works have been broadcast by radio stations including Deutschlandfunk Kultur (Germany), Bayerischer Rundfunk (Germany), Podium Klassiek (Netherlands), and WebSYN Radio (France).

After studying Art History at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Öztekin completed his composition studies at the Composition Department of Kocaeli University State Conservatory. He has taught at Kocaeli University State Conservatory and Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, and since 2022 has been a lecturer in the Music Department of Istanbul Topkapı University.
